Age of female sexual consent under review
Irish Justice Minister Michael McDowell has played down reports that he may reduce the age of sexual consent for girls from 17 to 15, which is the current age of sexual consent for boys. But he did acknowledge that the current discrepancy in the legal age for males and females is a "tricky" issue, since in a case where a boy and a girl, both aged 16, had sexual intercourse, the boy would be committing an offense but the girl would not.
